Able Anglers Pty Ltd To Continue To Operate

Our services are quite simply, a respite service assisting people living with a Disability or Mental Illness to enjoy the finer things in life and to provide a meaningful, emotional assistance program whilst sitting by the water having a fish.

We often have participants who do not even throw a line in the water, this is because they are more interested in the health benefits of the interaction with us.

What are the health benefits of sitting by the water?

Seniors: Vitamin D status is a major health concern in Australia, particularly in seniors. Recreational fishing provides the health benefits of both physical activity and time spent outdoors receiving Vitamin D from the sun. Seniors play a crucial role in sharing a lifetime of
knowledge and skills to novice anglers and any catch consumed provides an easily digested source of lean protein with substantial health benefits.

Disabled: Recreational fishing is one of the few outdoor activities that can be enjoyed regardless of age or disability providing the benefits of physical activity and exposure to the sun. Volunteer groups within Australia have been designing and using supports to allow people with limited mobility to partake, enjoy nature and socialise.

Mental Health: Individuals or groups can recreationally fish providing solitude or socialisation respectively. Some hyperactive children are noted to sit calmly by the water for
extended periods of time; uncommunicative children verbally express the desire to fish and some say recreational fishing is one of the few pursuits that appears to calm schizophrenic individuals.

Stress and Anxiety Reduction: It has long been known that the main reason people go fishing is to relax and unwind. Reducing stress and anxiety impacts positively on many other chronic conditions and improves overall quality of life.

How Do We Keep Our Participants Safe?

Moreton Bay Able Anglers takes the COVID-19 situation very seriously, we have changed many things we do, some of these things will continue to be part of our procedures long after the COVID-19 situation has finished.  Here is some of what we are doing;

  • We contact all participants and support workers prior to the sessions to ensure they are in good health and spirits, this is not only a COVID-19 check, it is a general welfare check on our participants as part of our duty of care.
  • Clean all fishing rods, tackle and tools with isopropyl prior to and after each session
  • Provide isopropyl based antibacterial hand sanitiser for all participants and support workers at the commencement, during and at the completion of each and every session
  • If stainless steel or any metal surface is being used by a participant, this area is also cleaned with isopropyl to reduce the risk of a spread
  • 30 minutes prior to every session, we attend the chosen location to ensure that social distancing can be safely adhered to, in the event that it is unable to be adhered to due to other community members at the location, the location will be changed to a close location for safety and social distancing compliance.

If We Are On Restrictions, How Can Able Anglers Pty Ltd Still Operate?

The current movement restrictions and restrictions in general in relation to the COVID-19 are important things to not only listen to, but adhere to, it is these restrictions which have been not only flattening the curve, saving lives, they have been preventing many more infections due to the COVID-19/Coronavirus.

On a personal level, we no longer takes the boat out for joy rides or goes out unless it is essential due to the recommendations, it is important that on a personal level, we adhere to any and all recommendations to protect ourselves, the community and to ensure that we do not potentially undo the great work we have put into our respite service.

Able Anglers Pty Ltd are a respite service for people living with a Disability and Mental Illness, during the current situation and unpredictability and uncertainty of this situation, a respite service is required primarily to maintain and stabilise ones mental health, this is exactly why our business was established, why it continues to operate and why it is so successful.

Do We Have Permission To Operate Or Do We Just Use Fancy Words?

Able Anglers Pty Ltd was designed in 2014 and launched in 2016.  The primary reason why our service was designed and built was due to the need for an emotional support service for mental health and the lack of inclusion for people living with a disability or mental illness.

We have been advocating through local, state and federal members of parliament for permission to continue to operate, not because we just want to fish but because the participants we assist will be significantly effected by isolation, in some cases, some participants only have our service offering to look forward to on a weekly basis and that is important for their mental health continual improvement.

Yesterday, Tuesday 7th April 2020, via twitter we received a response to our twitter post and tagging, our post was responded to by Luke Howarth who we should add, has been amazingly responsive during this pandemic.  We understand council members and members of parliament are busy and there are bigger issues to deal with than just keeping our small business operational, however, from our perspective, it is imperative that we continue to advocate and pressure for a response.

With the entire stimulus packages on offer and the time frames, we are actually not receiving or eligible for any assistance due to loopholes or oversight on certain conditions, for this reason it is important our service still continues to operate financially and emotionally.
